The Visit follows the return of the fabulously wealthy Claire Zachanassian to her impoverished hometown, where her arrival offers the struggling community a chance to escape its misery. But Claire’s promise of a billion marks comes with a devastating condition: the townspeople must confront an injustice from the past and decide how far they are willing to go for their town’s future. Darkly comic, provocative and morally challenging, The Visit explores justice, greed, guilt and the price of turning a painful past into profit. By Friedrich Durrenmatt. Translated by Maurice Valency
